Which Kayak is Right for You?
Recreational Kayaking is the FASTEST GROWING SPORT in America, and Westland Camping can set you up with everything you need to get started with this exciting sport - from Kayaks by Old Town and Ocean to PFD's and dry bags.
Why buy a kayak? In a word, VERSATILITY! It offers opportunity for the MOST and LEAST adventurous, the MOST and LEAST experienced, and the MOST and LEAST skilled. AND it can be done anywhere there's water, by children to seniors, with only a one-time investment.
If you enjoy scuba diving, touring or floating, a Kayak can make it more fun. Think of this: "The kayak's nearly silent form of propulsion, as well as it's ability to traverse shallow waters and get right up next to shore, allows one to explore a coastline or river in an entirely unique way." (We've had testimonials from Kayakers floating within 10 feet of deer drinking from the lake!)
And if you love to fish, there is no better way to do it than from a kayak. Get into those out-of-the-way areas that the fish love – without disturbing the fish. We can outfit a kayak with all the hardware you need, plus we have a great line of fishing poles perfect for kayaking, and all the tackle you need.
What's the difference between "sit-in" and "sit-on" Kayaks?
Although the names are self-explanatory, different people prefer different kayaks for different purposes and skill levels. A sit-in kayak has a much lower center of gravity - therefore, it tends to be more stable than a canoe. However, with their enclosed cockpit they also tend to be slightly harder to get in and out of. Because sit-on kayaks have an open deck rather than an enclosed one, they may be preferred by large or tall people, or those with limited flexibility; they have built-in pontoons for terrific stability.
Both types of kayaks offer models for both beginner and experts. Beginner's models tend to be wider, making them more stable (and slower). Expert kayakers often own more than one model depending on whether they plan to fish, drift down a river or ride giant ocean waves next to the folks on surfboards!
We're the Experts
We don't just sell kayaks - we USE them all summer (the photos above are from our family album). If you believe kayaks would be a great addition to your family's camping experience, come in and talk to our staff - you'll be glad you did.
